Reading Friends Volunteers

reading together“Books can be fun if someone helps you to understand them.”

Reading Friends volunteers are paired with school pupils and work with them in school to increase their confidence in reading. On average, children improve their reading age by up to 9 months after involvement in a ten week programme, so volunteers can really see the difference they help to make.

Typically, Reading Friends volunteers will develop reading confidence in young people by:

  • Hearing 2 children reading for 30 minutes every week.
  • Asking the child questions to check they have understood what they are reading.
  • Sounding out unfamiliar words phonetically.
  • Making reading engaging – using reading strategies like predicting what will happen next.

This is an ideal role for: Anyone looking to gain experience of working in schools or anyone wishing to help improve their own child’s reading.

Time commitment: 1 hour per week minimum for 10 weeks.

Locations: Schools across Kirklees.

Training: All Reading Friends volunteers receive 12 hours training over 3 mornings before being placed in school.
