People Helping People2016 – The Impact Sessions

people helping peopleCM456Here’s a gentle reminder for everyone who has not yet booked their place for the 2016 People Helping People conference:

Monday 6th June 9.30-4.30

Cathedral House, Saint Thomas Road, Huddersfield, HD1 3LG

This year we are focused on impact. Colleagues from public, private and third sectors will hear about new innovations and share great practice on working effectively with volunteers and enhancing and evidencing the phenomenal impact they deliver.

We have made the day’s activities flexible so people can attend the morning conference, or the afternoon masterclass, or both. Just state on your booking which you would like to attend.

This event is for people from across the public, private and third sectors working with or planning to work volunteers. As in previous years, we are based in Kirklees but colleagues and friends from across the North of England and beyond are more than welcome to join us.

MORNING: CONFERENCE

Our keynote speaker, Rob Jackson, is an international voice on volunteering in the 21st Century. He will talk about national and international trends in making sure that the impact of volunteering is high on everyone’s agenda.

Our workshops, hosted by a variety of experts will include:

  • Measuring Volunteering – Exploring ways you can show the impact, celebrate success and prove the value of your volunteers.
  • Working with Business Volunteers – Hear directly from businesses on what will attract them to your cause.  Businesses want to work with you to make a real impact in our communities. .
  • Developing meaningful volunteer roles – Working out what you really need from your volunteers and describing it better will help attract the right volunteers for the impact you want
  • Marketing your organisation – How to make an impact with your marketing and attract volunteers to you as well as how to make your organisation volunteer friendly.
  • Happy Hour – How to create attractive short term, one off micro volunteering opportunities that still have impact. And how just one happy hour can lead to many more.

 LUNCH

Over lunch, you are warmly invited to spend time networking with colleagues from across the region.

AFTERNOON: MASTERCLASS

Safeguarding and Working with Volunteers – the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) and Your Organisation

Lyn Gavin, Partnership Engagement Lead from the Disclosure & Barring Service will deliver definitive and specialist guidance on how this service works, when you should be applying it and what it means for your organisation and your work with volunteers.

Are you People Helping People?

people helping peopleCM456On Thursday 10th September 2015 and Friday 11th September 2015, I’m In Kirklees is one of the proud partners hosting the People Helping People Event - a two day conference, that will look at the landscape and tools we have to build and support a ‘people helping people’ culture.

The first day will focus on the role of and potential for volunteering in delivering social impact. The second day will focus on social value and how to apply it.

We have invited a range of national, regional and local speakers to address, provoke and challenge and want to create a vibrant environment for learning, networking, sharing and innovation.

The event is based in Kirklees but we will welcomes delegates from across the North of England, and beyond; delegates are strongly encouraged from across the public, private and third sectors and delegates are welcome to attend either or both days of the conference.

THURSDAY – DAY 1: Volunteering [FREE TO ATTEND]

will include international best practice in volunteer inclusion and development, practical strategies for recruiting and communicating with volunteers; measuring the impact of volunteers – and translating that into social and economic values.

FRIDAY – DAY 2: Social Value [REDUCED COST OF £25 to ATTEND]

will include the landscape on social value and its application three years on from the Act; technical areas around social value, reporting and measurement and how public and private sector use social value in people procurement.

How will you celebrate Volunteers’ Week?

I'm in - quotationVolunteers’ Week is fast appoaching (1st to 7th June 2015), and we are hoping to put together some joint publicity that we can all use online and in printed format to help promote the events and activities taking place across Kirklees during the week and work collaboratively in media and social media to highlight all the many great activities that go on all year round.

Events brochure

If you are holding an event and want it to appear in a Kirklees Volunteers’ Week brochure, what we need from you – for each event – is:

  • Title of the event
  • Who it is for
  • What it is (don’t forget to include your organisation name and links)
  • Date, Time and Venue
  • Please include a full address and postcode
  • Any booking required

These details will be made public.
Press release

In addition, for the press release we need:

  • A direct contact for your event: (phone / mobile / email)
  • Any relevant contact information the press may require
  • Details of any press photo

Where to send your information
If you email this to citiesofservice@kirklees.gov.uk by close of play on 8th May 2015 it can be included in the publicity.

If anyone has any high quality images from previous volunteers’ weeks please also send along.
Not holding an event? We can still promote your group…

Even if you are not doing a specific event for volunteers week but work with volutneers all year round – we would like to include everyone’s details in the “list of amazing organisations across Kirklees who work with volunteers week in and week out… and check out this page for ways you can volunteer with them…”

So please do email back say if you want to be in this list even if you aren’t doing something specific during the week.

For those of you who would like to do something (however small) but are finding cost to be a barrier, do drop me a line… I can sometimes find some spare coppers down the back of sofas… no guarantees etc etc

Similarly, if anyone is doing an event that you would particularly like someone from the council to support please let us know in advance and I’ll do my best.
Photo Competition / Social Media

During Giving Tuesday last year, social media challenged anyone undertaking an act of giving to take a selfie and hashtag it #unselfie to show the high number of selfless acts taking place.

We think it would be great if we could agree a joint hashtag for volunteers week in Kirklees – that we can all use – to show up the vast scale of volunteering and voluntary activities taking place in the district. I’m suggesting we use #ImIn followed by your own organisation or useful hashtag

We are currently looking for a sponsor to give a prize for the “best” volunteers week selfie – so if we use the #imin hashtag that will help that process.
Conflab15

And finally… in December when we had our first district wide Conflab we said we would try and do another just before Volutneers’ Week so watch this space for the date.

Keep in touch

If you don’t think you are on the regular Cities of Service Kirklees mailing list (with links to the blog posts, ideas etc) then please do drop us a line at citiesofservice@kirklees.gov.uk and we’ll add you in.
